Nathaniel Hooke's Roman History Complete in 8 Uniformly Bound Books Published 1765-1772

18th century
Description

Nathaniel Hooke (c.1687-1763) was an English historian and lifelong friend of Alexander Pope. This 5th edition of his work The Roman History, from the Building of Rome to the Ruin of The Commonwealth was published in Dublin between 1765 – 1772 by William Watson (vols I-VI) and James Williams (vols VII-VIII). Bound in contemporary polished full calf with raised bands and gilt decorated spines and gilt decorated morocco title labels. The front paste downs bear the armorial book-plate for Sir William Chatterton (1794-1855) 2nd Bart. of Castle Mahon, County Cork whose family motto ‘Loyal A Mort’ translates to Loyal to Death.

Contents are generally good, clean and bright with pale damp staining and light cockling to volume II and VII. All hinges intact but with some splitting of the paper covering to some of the interiors. Some minor loss of calf including to spine caps and part of the title label of vol VIII, some rubbing, some bumping to corners and some loss to gilding.

Each volume some 20.7cms high, 13.4cms deep and the total shelf coverage is approximately 26cms. Total unpackaged weight around 4.5kgs.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
