17 Uniformly Bound Books of George Meredith's Works Dated 1910/1914

1900 - 1920
Description

George Meredith, (1828 - 1909), English Victorian poet and novelist, whose novels are noted for their wit, brilliant dialogue, and aphoristic quality of language. Meredith’s novels are also distinguished by psychological studies of character and a highly subjective view of life that, far ahead of his time, regarded women as truly the equals of men. His best-known works are The Ordeal of Richard Feverel (1859) and The Egoist (1879).

These 17 books contain all but one of Meredith's 19 novels, lacking his last novel, Celtic and Saxon which was posthumously published in 1910. 1 volume contains 4 short stories and there are 2 volumes of Poems. Published between 1910 & 1914 by Constable & Company they are uniformly bound in brown polished half leather bindings with gilt decorated spines and gilt top edges.

Externally there is shelf wear, marks, bumping to corners, minor loss to gilding and rubbing consistent with age. There is some discolouration around the hinges where it appears a leather dressing or polish may have been applied that was a little darker than the original leather colour. Internally tightly bound and clean although pages a little aged tone. Dated inscription to front free end papers. The volumes are 19cms high, 13.4cms deep and the total shelf coverage is some 56.5cms.
