12 Book Set of Froude's History of England Bound by Bickers and Dated 1858-1870

James Anthony Froude’s (1814 – 1894) famous and monumental celebration of Queen Elizabeth I's Reign helped establish him amongst the greatest English prose writers of the 19th Century. An attractive 12 volume set of The History of England from the Death of Wolsey to the death of Elizabeth and from the Death of Wolsey to the defeat of the Spanish Armada. Before he published volume XI Froude decided that the defeat of the Spanish Armada would provide a more dramatic and appropriate conclusion and altered the title accordingly. The books are various editions dated 1858 - 1870 with the first 6 volumes published by Parkers and the next 6 by Longmans.

Uniformly bound by Bickers of London in full leather with polished tree calf boards with gilt decoration to margins and edges. Elaborately gilt decorated spines arranged as 6 compartments by 5 raised bands, with gilt decorated red and green Morocco title labels. Marbled boards and end papers. Light foxing to preliminaries and age toned margins to the remainder. Externally scuffs and wear, particularly to board edges, corners, and raised bands with some chipping to heads of spines and some loss of gilding. Nonetheless a good-looking set. Each volume measures 22.5 cm high, 15 cm deep and the overall shelf coverage totals some 45 cm. Combined unpackaged weight approximately 12 kg.
