First Edition 4 Book Set of the Speeches of Sir Robert Peel Dated 1853

Sir Robert Peel, 2nd Baronet, FRS (1788 – 1850) was a British Conservative statesman and one of the founders of the modern Conservative Party, who served twice as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom (1834–1835 and 1841–1846) simultaneously serving as Chancellor of the Exchequer (1834-1835) and twice as Home Secretary (1822–1827 and 1828–1830). He is regarded as the father of modern English policing, owing to his founding of the Metropolitan Police Service.

The Speeches of the late Right Honourable Sir Robert Peel, Bart., delivered in the House of Commons complete in 4 volumes with volume I covers the period 1810-1829, II 1829-1834, III 1835-1842 and IV 1842-1850. Bound in polished half calf over marbled boards with gilt decorated title labels and spines with 5 raised bands forming 6 compartments. The front paste down bears the label for Blackwell’s booksellers of Oxford and the book plate of Sir James M Hogg with his family crest and Latin Motto Dat Gloria Vires which translates to Glory gives Strength. The bookplate also states that these books occupied shelf 6 of case E.

Condition – internally some age toning and minor foxing to the first and last few pages otherwise clean and tightly bound. Title page to volume I and its content page are absent and do not appear to have been bound in. There is a repair to the top right-hand corner of the title page to volume II. Externally the marbled paper to the boards is grubby and worn, the corners are bumped and the corners and returns are scuffed. The spines are bright but also show signs of wear with some scuffing and loss to gilding. Each volume stands 22.5 cm tall, 14.5 cm deep and the set has a combined shelf coverage of 20.3 cm. Total unpackaged weight some 4.6 kg.
