Description

John Mackay Wilson (1804 – 1835) started writing this collection of stories as a weekly magazine in 1834 and published the first 48 magazines, totalling 73 tales. Following his death in 1835, his brother James continued the series, followed by Alexander Leighton (1800 – 1874) one of the original editors and contributors, who was a Scottish doctor, puritan preacher and pamphleteer.

This 12-book set is complete and contains 24 volumes, published by W P Nimmo, Hay & Mitchell. Uniformly bound in polished half calf with gilt decorated and lettered spine which has 5 raised bands. The covers, end papers and page edges are all marbled with the same design.

Internally tightly bound and clean with just very occasional and very minor light foxing. Externally shelf wear, some marks, some scuffing, light bumping to a handful of corners, some fading and loss to gilding.

Each volume stands 17.3 cm high, 12.7 cm deep and the set has shelf coverage of some 45 cm. Total combined unpackaged weight some 7.5 kg.
