12 Book First Edition Set of Froude's History of England Dated 1856-1870

19th century
Description

James Anthony Froude’s (1814 – 1894) famous and monumental celebration of Queen Elizabeth’s Reign helped established him amongst the greatest English prose writers of the 19th Century. This splendid 12 volume set of FIRST EDITIONS, dated 1856-1870, of The History of England from the Death of Wolsey to the death of Elizabeth and from the Death of Wolsey to the defeat of the Spanish Armada is uniform-ly bound in contemporary half red polished calf, over red cloth, spines in raised bands with gilt decoration and lettering. All edges gilt, marbled end papers and en-graved vignette frontispiece of Queen Elizabeth to volume VII. The first two volumes came out in 1856 with subsequent volumes appearing in pairs in 1858, 1860, 1863, 1866, and 1870. Before he published volume XI Froude decided that the defeat of the Spanish Armada would provide a more dramatic and appropriate conclusion altered the title accordingly. The first 6 volumes are published by John W Parker and Son, volumes VII & VIII by Longman, Green, Longman, Roberts & Green and thereafter the publisher is Longman, Green & Co.

Externally scuffs, wear, marks and some loss to the gilding. Internally light foxing generally to first and last few pages as well as sporadically throughout, otherwise clean, bright and tightly bound. Here and there transference of red leather dye to lighter marbled end papers. Each volume measures 20 cm high, 14.7 cm deep and the shelf coverage runs to some 47 cm. Combined unpackaged weight approximately 12 kg.

In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
