Handsomely Bound Partial Set of the Works of George Eliot in 18 Books

19th century
Description

Mary Anne (alternatively Mary Ann or Marian) Evans (1819 - 1880), who went under the pen name George Eliot to escape the stereotype of women only writing light-hearted romances, was a journalist, a translator and one of the leading writers of the Victorian era. She is the author of seven novels, most of them set in provincial England and well known for their realism and psychological insight. These 18 volumes are a partial set from the 24 volumes which comprise the Cabinet Edition as published by William Blackwood and Sons. They comprise various novels which are complete in one, two or three books. Whilst undated they are from around 1880.

A sparklingly handsome collection of uniformly bound books in polished half calf with marbled paper boards, end papers and page edges. The spines are profusely decorated in gilt over 4 panelled compartments with the two contrasting title label compartments also lettered in gilt. Very minor occasional light foxing and the tiniest hint of colour bleeding from the marbled paper to the first and last few pages with the text completely unaffected. Externally there is some light scuffing and marks in places, some bumping to corners, and general light shelf wear. There is some mild sun fading to some spines. Clerical Life, volume I, has an area of leather missing from the top corner of the front board and the front free end paper has a split running along some 3/4s of its length making the hinge visible, but the hinge is not split and holding firm. All volumes are tightly bound and the pages are clean although a little age toned.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
