Lord Macaulay's History of England Complete in 4 Leather Bound Books Dated 1864

Thomas Babington Macaulay, 1st Baron Macaulay, FRS FRSE PC (1800-1859) was a British historian, poet and Whig politician. He was an active opponent of slavery and a supported of education and equality in India. He wrote extensively as an essayist, on contemporary and historical socio-political subjects, and as a reviewer. Macaulay’s masterwork, The History of England (from the ascension of James II) was s seminal example of Whig historiography, and its literary style has remained an object of praise since its publication. This work covers the 17 year period from 1685-1702 and encompasses the reign of James II, the Glorious Revolution, the co-regency of William and Mary, up to William’s death. Macaulay is buried in Westminster Abbey.

This 4 volume set was published in 1864 by Longmans and is uniformly bound by Waddie & Co of Edinburgh, in brown half calf with marbled boards, end papers and paper fore edges. The spines, with gilt lettered title labels, are arranged in 6 compartments by 5 raised bands.

Each volume measures 18.9cms high, 12.6cms deep and the set has a total shelf coverage of some 9.5cms.

Condition. Internally the pages are somewhat age toned and have some light, occasional foxing, otherwise they are clean and tightly bound. The end papers to volume I are split along the inner front hinge bit the stitching is fully intact. Externally there us general wear to the extremities and there are areas of rubbing overall. There is a 3.5cm split to the bottom of the outer hinge of volume III.
