Description

This handsome set of Thackeray’s Works is complete in 13 volumes and was published by Smith, Elder & Co of London between 1891 & 1894. The set is uniformly bound by John Bumpus of Oxford Street in half polished calf with gilt decorated spines with the title, date of publication and a repeated decorative motif arranged within the 6 sections formed by 5 equally spaced raised bands. The top edges are gilt with the boards and end papers in green and gold marbled paper. There are various black and white illustrations and volume I carries a tissue guarded portrait frontispiece of the author.

The spines are variously marked with blemishes and a touch sun faded although volumes I-III have faded a little less than the rest. All volumes have some general shelf wear and some foxing to the front few pages as well as to the fore edges. The top section of the spine to volume XIII has a small area of leather missing. Each volume is tightly bound with no splitting to the leather. There is a short inscription to volume I recording that the set was a Christmas present in 1894.

Each volume measures 20.4cms high, 14.2cms deep and the total shelf coverage of the set is some 45.5cms.
