George III Mahogany Dining Table in the Manner of Thomas Butler

18th century
Description

A George III mahogany dining table consisting of a pair of rectangular side tables with rounded corners and reeded edges over a frieze with a matching reeded fringe. The side tables combine and extend to accommodate four additional leaves held by brass clips. Eight removable tapering reeded legs terminating in brass cup castors. Circa 1805-1810.

394cm long extended, 143cm wide, 74cm high.

The side tables are individually 75cm deep.

The leaves are approximately 60 deep and the table can be used with one, two three or four leaves.

The table is comparable to tables bearing the Butler trade plate though there is no evidence of a plate on this example. For a very similar example of a Butler patent table see C. Gilbert, Marked London Furniture, 1996. Page 130.

Thomas Butler specialised in campaign furniture and advertised furniture ‘calculated for the East and West Indies. Articles particularly adapted and for travelling and exportation’.

He also described himself as a ‘Manufacturer of the Patent Articles to the King and Queen’.

The tops are made from two matching pieces of high-quality, solid flame mahogany and typically have some shrinkage cracks due to the figure which are not structural. One leaf is definitely original, three are later. All are solid, period, mahogany and have had stabilising stretchers added to the undersides. The legs screw tightly to the table, the screws having been re-tapped or replaced. The top was repolished two years ago.
