Japanese Meiji (early 20thC) charcoal basket (Sumitori) for sencha tea ceremony with hexagonal body raised on short feet. The bamboo strips are woven in a variety of techniques to produce diverse patterns. Unsigned. 23cm diameter.
A superb example of the basket weaver’s craft, at which the Japanese rate among the best in the world.
Excellent condition and patina.
