A William IV library table is a piece of furniture dating from the British Regency and early Victorian transition period (roughly 1830 to 1837), characterised by robust classical proportions, heavy timber construction, and often featuring a leather-lined writing surface.

These tables were predominantly constructed from solid mahogany and mahogany veneers, frequently accented with hand-tooled leather writing surfaces, brass castors, and sometimes rosewood or satinwood inlay details.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit period-appropriate joinery such as hand-cut dovetails in the drawer construction, secondary timbers like oak or pine, patination consistent with age, and structural weight characteristic of 19th-century cabinet making.

This piece works effectively as a functional centrepiece in a home office or study, paired with contemporary seating to create a balanced contrast between historical craftsmanship and modern functionality.

Preservation involves maintaining stable indoor humidity levels away from direct heat sources, cleaning timber surfaces with a mild wax, and protecting the leather insert from moisture and direct sunlight.
