Description
An interesting late 19thC Chinese silver and hardwood walking can or stick c1890. The silver pommel is cast to form a scene of an Oriental gentleman seated in front of his courtyard house with two additional scenes either side of him. One appears to hold a knife and the other shows two individuals carrying a laden cloth, possibly with fruits of the harvest. All around is a grove of bamboo. The pommel has a plain and smooth top. The stick is made of a hardwood, similar to English hawthorn, though it is unlikely that an English wood has been used. The bark is light brown, matt, textured and knobbly. The stick has a good brass tip. In places small patches of the surface bark have lifted, revealing a lighter colour beneath. There are about 7 of these flicked off patches, consistent with the former use, but they do not detract from the quality and curiosity of this unusual stick.
