Victorian Taxidermy Wall Dome by James Gardner London Circa 1875

19th century
Description

Six brightly coloured tropical birds arranged amongst realistic groundwork with a delicate water colour backdrop of a tropical landscape with palm trees, that is all so familiar with the finest Gardner cases, complete within an ebonized frame and gilt slip. In untouched and unopened condition, complete with large trade label and original hanging hooks to verso. Taxidermy is extremely hard to find like this today, and yet so typical of what would have hung in the fashionable Victorian parlor, a wonder of the natural world, where the likes would have been unseen before.

-------------------

This famous taxidermy firm ran for nearly 80 years, and was founded around 1844 by James Gardner, and continued by his son, James Gardner (the trade label to the rear of this case gives the address as “52 High Holborn &29, London” and states “late 426 Oxford Street London”. The firm held Royal Warrants for Her Majesty Queen Victoria, The Royal Families of England and France plus many more notable clients. The firms place as one of the great British taxidermists is fully deserved.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
