FAQs

A papier mache inkstand is a desk accessory from the 19th century used to hold inkwells, pens, and stamps, typically crafted from layered paper pulp treated with oil and varnish.

They were constructed from pressed paper pulp or layered sheets coated in dark japan or lacquer, frequently embellished with mother-of-pearl inlay, known as pearlware, and hand-painted gilt details.

Authentic pieces exhibit signs of age such as craquelure in the lacquer, hand-cut mother-of-pearl pieces, original blown or pressed glass inkwells, and construction methods consistent with mid-19th-century manufacturing.

It can be placed on top of a writing desk, bookcase shelf, or side table to add historical contrast, texture, and a focal point to contemporary study spaces.

Keep them out of direct sunlight to prevent lacquer fading and cracking, dust gently with a dry, soft microfibre cloth, and avoid using liquid cleaners or solvents.
