Encaustic tiles are ceramic floor or wall tiles where the surface pattern is created by inlaying different coloured clays into the main body rather than applying surface glaze. Highly popular across Western Europe between the 12th and 16th centuries, they were extensively used in monasteries, cathedrals, and royal palaces.

Craftsmen created these tiles by pressing a carved wooden stamp with a raised motif into soft red terracotta clay to leave an impression. The indented design was subsequently filled with a liquid white clay slip, coated in a lead glaze, and fired in a kiln.

Genuine medieval tile fragments display hand-moulded irregularities, uneven slip inlay depth, and surface glaze wear along high points. Close inspection often reveals fine lead-glaze crazing, natural grit inclusions within the coarse terracotta clay, and hand-chiseled bevelling on the reverse.
