Description

A stunning late 17th century 'Bargello' work wool embroidery, probably Italian. The technique was developed in Florence and resembles the soumac technique employed in eastern flatweaves. The fabric produced usually had a 'flame' pattern and were usually used for upholstery. Today, they have a truly modern resonance and work equally well covering furniture or as wall decoration. This piece has survived well with fine glossy wool and a lovely range of colours. The repeat flame design is drawn on a scale which does not crowd the overall effect of the design. This is a rare lovely thing.
