Fine Carved Oak Cradle Dated 1677

17th century
Description

An interesting (and we think quite rare) 17th century carved oak CRADLE, set upon integral rockers, with four turned baluster ‘finials’ and two spirally-turned handles, topped by acorns, one at either end, for setting the cradle in rocking motion. It is decorated all over with typical carving of the period, whilst at one end is a hinged door, with the initials “MHM” and the date 1667. (All measurements below are maximum)

The cradle is an ancient piece of furniture, and its origins are unknown but every period of furniture style has produced a variety of cradle styles, from simple boxes to the elaborate draped state cradles of 16th-18th century Europe. The carved oak cradles mounted on rockers so popular from the 15th through the 17th century were gradually superseded in the 18th and 19th centuries by wicker cradles that were slung between end supports in order to raise them higher from the ground.
