In A Nutshell Antiques and Interiors has dated this piece to the 1910s.
The hoof itself is also mounted to a plated shoe. The hinged lid opens to reveal a glass inkwell and it also has a pen rest on the back. The bottom of the shoe is marked with a maker's stamp for "Rowland Ward & Co, Naturalists, 166 Piccadilly".

It is in very good condition for its age and displays very nicely. The hoof is a good large size with a nice patina and shine. The mount is in good condition with just some small dinks and dents but nothing detrimental. The hinge and glass liner are in good order. There is some minor wear and rubbing to the plate in places and some areas of tarnishing but nothing detrimental and it has been lightly cleaned and polished to retain its natural aged patina.
The best description comes from the photos so please look at them all carefully and if you have any questions just ask.
