We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An Italian gilded devotional shrine is an architectural niche or micro-structure created to hold religious statues, crucifixes, or reliquaries in private chapels or churches. Popular during the Baroque and Rococo periods, these structures featured classical architectural motifs such as columns, crowns, and scrollwork embellished with gold leaf.

These pieces were typically carved from softwoods such as pine or poplar, coated in multiple layers of gesso, and burnished with red bole prior to gold leaf application. Architectural components like fluted columns, carved crowns, and scrollwork were carved individually and assembled using traditional joinery.

Authentic Italian Baroque pieces display hand-carving variations, subtle oxidisation of the gilding, and visible red bole showing through areas where the gold leaf has worn naturally. Joinery often incorporates hand-forged iron or wooden pegs alongside age-consistent timber contraction.

A carved gilded shrine serves as an architectural statement piece on a sideboard top, console, or mantelpiece. Interior designers often use the framed space to display contemporary ceramics, mineral specimens, or singular decorative objects to contrast with modern surroundings.

Gilded surfaces require dusting using a dry camel-hair brush to prevent lifting delicate gold leaf. Water, liquid cleaners, and solvent polishes must be avoided completely, as moisture dissolves underlying gesso layers and permanently damages the surface finish.
