Japanese Gold Lacquer & Shibayama Table Screen by Masaaki

Description

As part of our Japanese Works of art collection we are delighted to offer this outstanding gold lacquer & shibayama encrusted two fold table screen from the opulent Meiji period 1868-1912, the larger front panels depict a joyful scene of dancers, musicians and acrobats decorated in semi precious stones upon a hiramakie, kirigane and kinji ground, probably celebrating a special occasion like the Sakura ( cherry blossom season ), the lower panels finely decorated with floral displays within fans, to the reverse of this magnificent screen is a more traditional and tranquil setting, the panels depicts birds amidst flora and upon wisteria branches,the lower panels simply decorated with further flora within fan shaped cartouches, the panels all being housed within an oki-hirame decorated frame held together with intricate silver hinges,the shoulders further embellished with chased silver decoration, a rare and exceptional piece of gold lacquer and shibayama work, artist signed by Masaaki , a well known shibayama artist of the period .

UK private collection having been previously supplied by ourselves.
