Description

Attractive Swiss Victorian treen (walnut?) wooden seated figure astride a boot, which looks like an egg cup (duck eggs?). Created as a souvenir of Mürren, the name carved on the base, it was probably made in Brienz (see below). The base measure 4¾in (12cm) x 2 ¾in (7cm), height 4” (10cm).

Beautiful carving and patina, some damage or wear at the top of the boot, otherwise excellent condition.

The wood-carving industry of Switzerland originated in the picturesque town of Brienz. From humble beginnings of a cottage industry in the early 1800s it grew by the turn of the 20th century to become the industrial driving force of a whole community. By 1910 there were some 1300 carvers plying their trade.
