A Sparkling Uniformly Bound 21 Book Selection of Carlyle's Collected Works from the Library Edition Published 1869-1871

19th century
Description

Thomas Carlyle (1795 – 1881) was a British historian, satirical writer, essayist, translator, philosopher, mathematician and teacher. His 1837 History of the French Revolution was the inspiration for Charles Dicken’s 1859 novel a Tale of Two Cities and remains popular today. (Wikipedia).

These 21 volumes form part of The Library Edition of his collected works published between 1869-1871 as a 30-volume set and later enlarged to 34 volumes. The 21 volumes comprise Translations from the German, complete in 3 volumes, The History of the French Revolution, also complete in 3 volumes, 5 of the 6 volumes of Critical and Miscellaneous Essays and all 10 volumes of the History of Friedrich II of Prussia, called Frederick the Great.

A striking run of uniformly bound polished half tan calf with marbled boards, page edges and end papers. The spines have raised bands and are elaborately decorated in gilt with contrasting gilt lettered red and green morocco title labels in the 2nd and 3rd compartments. The set on Frederick the Great have some illustrations and a few fold-out maps.

A tightly bound and smart set with some age toning to the pages, some light foxing mainly to the first and last few pages and on and around some illustrations. Externally some shelf wear, marks and light scuffing. The green title labels are somewhat faded and there is some loss to the gilding which otherwise remains bright and vibrant.

The books stand some 21.2 cm tall, are 14.4 cm deep and have a combined shelf coverage of around 75.5 cm. The total unpackaged weight is approximately 16.3 kg.
