19th century
Description

A new edition published in London in 1823 in complete in 8 volumes. Uniformly bound in polished full calf with with triple gilt and blind stamped fillets to boards and with the gilt decorated spines arranged in 5 compartments with raised bands and gilt lettering to title labels. Marbled page edges. Bookplate of Reverend Edward Breton (1804-1875) in volume VI having hand written note advising that the works were bought by him in a book shop in Exeter in 1875 and that he was Rector of Charnmouth, Dorset (St Andrew's church). There is another pasted in note that also mentions the purchase although it is difficult to decipher in its entirety (see photo). The end paper of volume I has a pasted in printed list of the family of The 7th Duke of Newcastle (Henry Pelham Archibald Pelham-Clinton).

Condition:- externally some bumps to corners, shelf wear, scuffs, marks, loss to gilding and minor loss to a couple of title labels. Some outer hinges have short runs of splits and that to volume VIII is at the top and bottom of the hinge to the front cover but all stitching is still intact. The front cover has an old retailer's label to the top right hand corner as well as '8 Vols' faintly handwritten, possibly in crayon, to the left of the label (see photo). Internally a number of the end pages over the front hinges are split as are some the of those to the rear hence some hinges are tender. The pages are aged toned and have foxing form time to time although the frontispiece portrait of Shakspeare to volume I and the title page are both heavily foxed (see photo). Volume VI has some missing stitching to a block of pages which are loose but not detached as some stitching still in place. A handsome set with an interesting blind stamped 'linen fold' form design to spines.

Each volume stands 21.6 cm tall and has a depth of 14 cm. Combined shelf coverage of some 25.7 cm. The set has a total unpackaged weight of some 6 kg.
