Leather Bound 5 Book Set of the Poetical Works of Elizabeth Barrett Browning Dated 1886

Elizabeth Barrett Browning (1806 – 1861) was an English poet of the Victorian era, popular in both Britain and the United States. Whilst she wrote poetry from the age of eleven it was not until 1838 that her first collection of adult poems was published. Writing prolifically between 1841-1844, producing poetry, translations and prose she was a rival to Tennyson as a candidate for poet laureate on the death of Wordsworth. Besides catching the eye of the reading public she also attracted the attention of established English poet Robert Browning with whom she exchanged nearly 600 letters over 20 months, culminating in their elopement in 1846. Barrett’s father was very much against the marriage, disinherited her and never spoke with his daughter again.

Bound in full polished tan calf with gilt decorated board edges, boards and spines with raised bands providing 6 compartments two of which have contrasting gilt lettered title labels. The page edges and end papers are marbled, the inner dentelles are blind stamped and there is a portrait frontispiece to volume I the heavily foxed image of which is mirrored to the title page (see photo). 14th Edition published in 1886 by Smith Elder

Internally the pages are a little age toned and occasionally lightly foxed, otherwise clean and tightly bound. Externally some wear to some high points, including some bumping to corners, minor marks, light scuffing, a little loss to the gilding and some discolouration to the spines.

Each volume is 16.6 cm high, 11.1 cm deep and the combined shelf coverage is some 14.4 cm. The unpackaged weight is approximately 2.12 kg.
