The Authentic Edition of the Works of Charles Dickens Complete in 21 Uniformly Bound Books by Riviere & Son Dated 1901.

Description

This scarce Authentic Edition was printed from the Edition that was carefully corrected by the author in 1867 and 1868 with original illustrations by Cruikshank, Leech, Phiz and others. Colour frontispieces and full page black & white plates protected with tissue guards captioned in red and title pages printed in red & black. Light green end papers illustrated with a portrait of Dickens age 27 at the front and another aged 58 at the back. Vol I, Pickwick Papers; II, Tale of Two Cities; III, Oliver Twist; IV, Christmas Books; V, Nicholas Nickleby; VI, Martin Chuzzlewit; VII, Dombey & Son; VIII, Old Curiosity Shop; IX, Barnaby Rudge; X, David Copperfield; XI, Bleak House; XII, Little Dorrit; XIII, Great Expectations; XIV, Our Mutual Friend; XV, Hard Times & Re-printed Pieces; XVI, Sketches by Boz; XVII, American Notes & Pictures From Italy; XVIII, Un-commercial Traveller/Lamplighter/To Be Read at Dusk &Sunday/Under Three Heads & The Lazy Tour of Two Idle Apprentices; XIX, Child's History of England; XX, Christmas Stories; XXI, Edwin Drood & Master Humphrey's Clock. The set is uniformly bound by the highly regarded Riviere and Son bindery in tan polished half calf over marbled end papers. Gilt decorated spines and top page edges.

Internally the books are clean and bright with light foxing only to the page fore edges. Previous inked ownership signature of Evelyn Hill to front end papers. Externally bumping to corners, and general scuffing, marks and wear to covers and spines. 5 cm hinge split from the base of both sides of volume 9 although is holding firm with no splitting internally to the end papers. 15 cm split along back hinge of vol 7 but with no splitting to end paper (see photo). Partial darkening to some spines.

Height of each volume 21 cm, depth 15 cm and the combined shelf length some 89.5 cm. Un-packaged weight approximately 20.6 kg.
