Superb and Complete 8 Book Set of Gibbon's the History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire Full Leather Bindings by Zaehnsdorf Dated 1881

19th century
Description

Edward Gibbon (1737-1794), born into a prosperous family, was an historian, member of the House of Commons, and member of Dr. Johnson's Club. He is considered to be the greatest English Enlightenment historian on the basis of his masterpiece, The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire. This fine 8 volume set with notes by Milman and Guizot is a new edition with additional notes by WIlliam Smith DCL & LLD with a portrait of the author and a fold out map to each volume. Bound by the highly revered of firm of Zaehnsdorf, founded in London around 1843 by the Austro-Hungarian Joseph Zaehnsdorf and now incorporated in the firm Shepherds Sangorski & Sutcliffe. Published in 1881 by John Murray of Albemarle Street and printed by William Clowes & Sons, also of London.

This complete and beautifully bound set is in full polished calf with elaborately gilt decorated spines arranged in 6 compartments by raised bands with gilt lettering to the title labels. The end papers and page edges are marbled.

A sparkling set of this classic work on Roman history presented in very good antiquarian condition. Externally are some marks and general light wear including some losses to the gilding which otherwise remains fresh and bright. Internally the pages are clean and tight although a little age toned. Light foxing to preliminaries, last few leaves and a very little to some maps but text mostly free other than minor appearances to the very edge of the pages. Small tear to edge of one map and couple of small tears along folds with old well executed repairs.

Each volume is some 22.2cms high, 14.7cms deep and the set has shelf run of some 20.59 cms.
