Description

This superb set is bound by Giulio Giannini of Florence artistic bookbinders and hand made marbled paper specialists, since 1856. They are bound in a rich maroon polished calf with extravagant gilt tooling, gilt page edges and marbled end papers. A really rather special set.

The text of each is of the Oxford Edition prepared by W J Craig; introductory studies of the several plays by Edward Dowden and a full Glossary. Tissue guarded portrait frontispiece to each volume. Published by Henry Frowde, Oxford University Press, London, New York, Toronto and Melbourne and dated between 1911 - 1912. Unnamed bookplate, dated to 1912, to each front blank which reads - "Books help us to level the ups and downs of the load of life."

The Comedies of Shakespeare - 1128 pages, Tragedies - 1315 pages, Histories and Poems 1214 pages.

The books are very well presented with minor marks, light scuffing and the usual shelf wear to the exterior. Hint of a slight twist to spines. Internally a little dustiness/foxing to the first few leaves. Whilst all pages remain in place the majority of the front and rear free paste downs are cracked or cracking. An occasional crease and spot otherwise they are in clean and firm condition.

Volume height 18.6cms, depth 13cms and each is around 4.3cms wide.
