Puckerings has dated this piece to the 1880s.
The tray is engraved with the postage rates and there is an engraved Ivory plaque to the front with the following:
Letters Exceeding 12oz Are Charged 1/2d (half a penny) Every Additional 2 ounces. Book Post 1/2d (half a penny) For Each 2 Ounces. These rates were in use between 1885 and 1897 allowing us to date this set fairly accurately.
One of the weights is signed S Simkins, Exeter and another V.R. for Victoria Regina.
Excellent condition with the brass having been professionally polished to gleam. Measuring 7 1/2" x 4" the scales stands 4" tall.
