Large Antique Drum Microscope

19th century
Description

Good example of a high quality mid-19th Century drum microscope in it's original fitted wooden case, complete with an array of lenses and accessories.

The microscope itself is made of brass and is a typical upright design with a tubular body and a coarse focus rack and pinion knob on the side. It has a circular brass stage and a mirror below to direct the light. There are no maker's details anywhere on the microscope but it is typical of mid-19th Century English design microscopes. It measures approximately 9" (23cm) high and the base diameter is 2 3/8" (6cm).

There are 4 brass objective lenses in total, each numbered 1-4. However number 4 appears to not have any glass and there is movement in the glass in 1 and 3. It has an eyepiece built into the tube and it comes with an additional magnifying lens that attaches to the stage for inspecting larger specimens. It also comes with various other glass covers and inserts.

The microscope comes in it a fitted velvet lined wooden box with sections for the accessories and lenses. The box is sturdy and in good condition with a nice aged patina although it's missing one closing latch on the front. It measures approximately 9 3/4" (25cm) long X 3 1/2" (9cm) wide X 3" (8cm) deep.

The microscope appears to be in good working order and I have set it up and tested it with a few old slides. I'm sure the lenses would probably benefit from a clean and some attention but they produced a clear image all the same and the microscope was easy to focus.

Overall the microscope is in good condition for its age. It has been used and will have normal signs of wear. The brass is tarnished and the lacquer has worn in places but there are no major damages or dents and it displays well. I am not sure whether the screws holding the mirror in place are original or not as it needs to be manually adjusted. Although in working order it is really being sold as a decorative / collectors item rather than an accurate scientific instrument.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
