16 Handsome and Uniformly Bound Books by Alexandre Dumas Circa 1890

19th century
Description

Alexandre Dumas (1802 – 1870) is one of the most widely read French authors with his works having been translated into many languages. Many of his historical novels of high adventure including The Count of Monte Cristo and The Three Musketeers have been adapted since the early 20th century into nearly 200 films.

Prolific in several genres, Dumas began his career by writing plays in addition to which he also wrote numerous magazine articles as well as travels books. His published works total some 100,000 pages.

Although this set does not contain all of Dumas’ novels it is the complete set as published by George Routledge of London, (undated but circa 1890) as shown by the list of novels to the front of each volume. This set is uniformly bound in polished half calf with marbled paper boards, end papers and edges. The spines are arranged as six compartments by 5 raised bands, with the 2nd and 4th compartment containing gilt lettered title labels with all other compartments attractively gilt decorated. There are a few black and white illustrations in a couple of the volumes. Each book measures some 18.5cms high and 12.5cms deep. Whilst the widths vary the total shelf length is approximately 50cms.

CONDITION. Tightly bound and generally clean although there is age toning to the margins of some works and some other volumes are printed on a different type of paper which has browned. Whilst intact some of pages in the Queen’s Necklace sit a little proud of the rest of the pages. Externally the marbled page edges are faded and the spines are a little faded. There is some wear, scuffing and marks to all exteriors. Gilt work reasonably bright.

Declaration

Donnelly Antiques Ltd has dated this piece to the 1890s.
