Description

Mary Ann Evans (22 November 1819 – 22 December 1880; alternatively Mary Anne or Marian, known by her pen name George Eliot, was an English novelist, poet, journalist, translator and one of the leading writers of the Victorian era. Like Charles Dickens and Thomas Hardy, she emerged from provincial England and most of her works are set there. They are known for their realism, psychological insight, sense of place and detailed depiction of the countryside.

Although female authors were published under their own names during her lifetime, she wanted to escape the stereotype of women's writing being limited to light-hearted romances. She also wanted to have her fiction judged separately from her already extensive and widely known work as a translator, editor, and critic. Another factor in her use of a pen name may have been a desire to shield her private life from public scrutiny, thus avoiding the scandal that would have arisen because of her relationship with the married George Henry Lewes.

Her novel Middlemarch was described by the novelist Virginia Woolf as "one of the few English novels written for grown-up people" and by Martin Amis and Julian Barnes as the greatest novel in the English language. Wikipedia.

Comprising 8 works uniformly bound in 7 volumes, volumes III and IV being bound as one. Polished half calf bindings with marbled paper covers, end papers and edges with the spines divided into 6 compartments by 5 raised bands with gilt lettering and gilt Art Nouveau floral decoration. Published by William Blackwood as a New Edition as whilst undated circa 1890. The books have a height of some 18.8cms, a depth of 13cms and whilst of varying widths the length of the total run is about 24.3cms.

CONDITION: Internally tightly bound and clean save for sporadic foxing to parts of most volumes. Externally: Wear, marks and scuffing with faded spines.

Date of Manufacture

Donnelly Antiques Ltd has dated this piece to the 1890s.
