The History of Scotland by John Hill Burton Complete in 8 Books

Description

John Hill Burton FRSE (22 August 1809 – 10 August 1881) was a Scottish advocate, historian, economist, secretary of the Scottish Prison Board (1854–77) and Historiographer Royal for Scotland (1867–1881).

This attractive 8 volume set is bound in polished tan half calf with marbled paper boards, end papers and paste downs. The gilt decorated spine has 5 raised bands forming 6 compartments with the 2nd and 3rd containing gilt lettered red and green title labels. This second edition was published in 1874 by William Blackwood and Sons. The full title of the work is The History of Scotland from Agricola's invasion to the extinction of the last Jacobite insurrection.

Externally the volumes have some wear and marks and internally they are clean and tightly bound with some age toning and some light foxing. Each volume is approximately 18.6cms high, 13cms deep and whilst of varying widths the total is some 24.2cms.
