Framed Whale Bone Scrimshaw Picture, C1800

19th century
Description

Interesting framed whale bone scrimshaw picture, c1800.The scrimshaw picture is very well composed and executed and depicts a 3 masted sailing ship displaying an English flag .There is an inscription at the bottom 'The Amphion'. This is a reference to the classical Greek hero and there have been a number of famous ships named 'Amphion'. The rear of the picture is covered in paper which is covered in writing . Unfortunately I cannot make out all the script as it has faded and parts are torn, but it looks to be an extract from a will. The bits I can read say something similar to: ' and behoof of the said Anthony and behoof of the said Samuel of forty years from assigns the sum of eight pounds life subject nevertheless to should be and not as joint tenants and to and for the said Anthony Hendick his lifetime together of fifty pounds and ...' . I am not sure what the frame is made from , it is not wood and it appears to be something similar to slate? The colour/patina is good and clearly shows age. Overall condition is in line with age and use. There have been several repairs to the frame and small losses around the edge. The picture is not currently fixed in the frame (easily rectified). Please refer to the detailed photographs and feel free to contact me with any questions or if you would like to view the item.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
