16 Uniformly Bound Leather Books of Works by George Meredith Circa 1920

George Meredith, (1828 - 1909), English Victorian poet and novelist, whose novels are noted for their wit, brilliant dialogue, and aphoristic quality of language. Meredith’s novels are also distinguished by psychological studies of character and a highly subjective view of life that, far ahead of his time, regarded women as truly the equals of men. His best known works are The Ordeal of Richard Feverel (1859) and The Egoist (1879).

These 16 books contain all but one of Meredith's 19 novels, lacking his last published novel (published 1910) Celtic and Saxon, and 4 novels are contained in 1 of the volumes. There is also a volume of his poems. All of these 18 novels were originally published during the second half of the 19th century with these volumes all being variously published between 1892 and 1919. They are handsomely and uniformly bound by Truslove and Hanson of London W1 in a rich Cherry coloured polished half calf binding (spines, returns and corners) with the remainder of the boards cloth covered. The spines are arranged as 6 compartments by 5 raised bands and are gilt decorated including the 2 title compartments and the leather edges where they meet the cloth on the boards are marked with gilt tramlines. The top edges are also gilt and the paste downs are marbled.

The books have a height of some 19.2cms, a depth of some 13.5cms and whilst they varying in width the total run extends to approximately 48.5cms.

Condition. Internally the pages are tightly bound and clean albeit a little aged toned. There is some accidental corner folding of some pages to two volumes. Externally the gilding is bright and fresh in the main and the bindings have light scuffs/shelf wear and some marks to the cloth coverings.
