Champlevé, in the decorative arts, an enamelling technique or an object made by the champlevé process, which consists of cutting away troughs or cells in a metal plate and filling the depressions with pulverized vitreous enamel. The raised metal lines between the cutout areas form the design outline. Champlevé can be distinguished from the similar technique of cloisonné by a greater irregularity in the width of the metal lines. After the enamel has annealed and cooled, it is filed with a Carborundum stone file, smoothed with pumice stone, and polished.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A 19th-century French champleve pin tray is a small decorative vessel crafted from gilt bronze (ormolu) featuring inlaid champleve enamel work and often a painted porcelain central motif, traditionally used on dressing tables to store pins or small items of jewellery.

Champleve enamel involves carving or casting recessed cells into a metal substrate, filling them with powdered glass enamel, firing the piece, and polishing it smooth. The surrounding metal frame is typically cast in bronze and fire-gilded to create a rich gold finish.

Authentic pieces feature finely chased gilt bronze with subtle wear to high points, complex multi-coloured champleve enamelling flush with the metal grid, and hand-painted central porcelain medallions showing microscopic detail.

Place the dish on a bedside table, dressing chest, or entryway sideboard as a refined catching vessel for rings, keys, or cufflinks, blending historical craftsmanship into contemporary surface arrangements.

Dust gently with a soft microfibre cloth or dry soft-bristled brush. Avoid abrasive chemical cleaners, harsh metal polishes, or prolonged water exposure, which can strip gilding and compromise delicate enamel cells.
