A Powerful Military Telescope by Ross London

1900 - 1920
Description

Late 19thC or early 20thC this is a powerful military telescope by ROSS of LONDON. The telescope is signed ROSS on the last draw with a Military arrow and the serial number 30728 FA (Field Artillery ?) The telescope focusses well with a CLEAR image despite the chips to the outer edge of the objective lens, usually covered by the pull out sun shade. (see photos). The photographs also show the magnification, the first directed towards a telegraph pole some 250meters away and the second to the woods on the far horizon about a kilometer away. These images are much clearer when viewed with your eye. The brass barrel is leather covered with some repairs where the leather has parted over the years and is well matched in. The scope has minor dents and scratches due to its former use. The eyepiece has a slide cover. The stand is by Lilley and Reynolds of London and has sectional legs allowing either desk standing or full height exterior viewing. It is well made and rotates smoothly and can be adjusted vertically. There is a glass level with vernier scale.

The chipped objective lens is shown in the photographs and these only result in the minutest of spots on the outer edge of the viewed image in my opinion not worth further action.

The telescope is excellent for both terrestrial (Land and sea) or astronomical viewing with the image being the correct way up.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
