3 Sets of Works by Lord Macaulay in 16 Uniformly Bound Leather Books 1880-1895

This very smart set of 16 volumes comprises of 3 complete works by Lord Thomas Babington Macaulay as follows:-

A 4 volume set of his Miscellaneous Writings, Speeches and Poems, published 1880; an 8 volume set of The History of England (from the accession of James II to the death of William III), published 1885 and a 4 volume set of Critical and Historical Essays published in 1895.

All 16 books are uniformly bound by Mudie, printed by Spottiswoode and Co and published by Longmans, Green and Co., all of London. They are bound in full blue dyed calf with gilt decorated spines arranged as 6 compartments by 5 raised bands and the edges of the books are also gilt decorated. The title labels and volume numbers are in gilt on red leather backgrounds within two adjacent compartments. The boards have borders of gilt tramlines and blind tooled decoration and the page edges and end papers are marbled.

The books are 17.5cms high and have a depth of approximately 12.4cms. Whilst the books vary in width they have a collective run of some 42cms.

Thomas Babington Macaulay, 1st Baron Macaulay, FRS FRSE PC (1800 – 1859) was a British historian, poet and Whig politician. He was an active opponent of slavery and a supporter of education and equality in India. He wrote extensively as an essayist, on contemporary and historical socio-political subjects, and as a reviewer. Macaulay's masterwork, The History of England (from the ascension of James II) was a seminal example of Whig historiography, and its literary style has remained an object of praise since its publication. This work covers the 17 year period from 1685 to 1702 and encompasses the reign of James II, the Glorious Revolution, the coregency of William III and Mary II, up to William III's death. This was originally published as a work in 5 volumes which achieved sales of some 130,000 in Great Britain alone within its first 25 years of availability. Volumes I & II were published in December 1848, volumes III & IV in November 1855 and Volume V was published posthumously in 1861. Macaulay is buried in Westminster Abbey.

Condition. Internally the pages are a little age toned but otherwise clean and tightly bound. Externally there is some rubbing to the extremities and spines - see photos.
