Rare & Outstanding Mother of Pearl Inlaid Rosewood Chess Board / Backgammon Box

Description

Dating to around 1850, this is a really outstanding figural folding combined chess & backgammon box in the form of a book with the spin inlaid with pewter stringing to imitate a book's binding.

The box opens out into a stunning chess board, the white squares being made of Mother of Pearl or Nacre shell inlaid into the exotic Rosewood, and the black squares being formed from Coromandal wood. Each square measures 1 1/8". The wood used where the pages of a book would show; opposite the spine, top and bottom are made from Satinwood.

The interior reveals another special board for Backgammon made from Birdseye Maple with Rosewood inlay.

An exceptional piece the likes I have never come across before. Superb condition, measuring 12 1/2" x 6 3/4 while close.
