Description

A rare hand coloured map of England and Wales by Gerard Valck (1622-1726) a Dutch engraver, publisher and cartographer and his son Leonardus (1675-1746). Gerard Valck was born in Amsterdam, but worked in London in the 1670s, where he engraved many portraits of the English nobility. In Amsterdam, he had a close partnership with his son Leonardus.

Dating from 1724, the map is highly detailed, with cities, towns and villages labelled not only in England and Wales, but also in the Eastern parts of Ireland and in the South of Scotland.

To the verso of the map, an extraordinary find of rare gems: four original engravings of English Kings: Henry I, Stephen (1092-1154), John (1166-1216) and Henry III. They were published in 1649 in the "Chronicle of the Kings of England" by Sir Richard Baker, a work that presented 25 portraits of English Kings with histories of their lives. Individual plates are rare - the only ones I have been able to locate were in the Royal Collection.

The map does show wear and tear, with creases; a few holes, and old tape to the verso. It nonetheless would present handsomely once framed. The sheet size is 51 x 63 cm. map size 46 x 56 cm. The plates depicting English Kings measure 12 x 7.7cm each.
