18th century
Sold 2 December 2020 · Opus Antiques
This “18th Century Coffee Grinder” found a buyer.

It was listed by Opus Antiques. Sold pieces stay on Sellingantiques as a record of what has passed through, and the next one is rarely far away.

Description

An 18th century lignum vitae coffee grinder or mill. The acorn finial unscrews so that the handle can be placed on the spindle, below there is a steel grinding mechanism. Coffee beans are placed in the top and the ground coffee is retrieved from the base which unscrews. The handle which is a replacement folds away in the base.

These grinders were very expensive to make because they used expensive lignum vitae and steel for the internal grinding mechanisms. In the 18th century they cost approx 45 shillings to make, equivalent to around £230 or 22 days wages for a skilled tradesman.

In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
