In A Nutshell Antiques and Interiors has dated this piece to the 1910s.
It is a very clever design with each piece having a brass peg on the bottom which allows it to be fixed in place when the folding board is closed - allowing a game to be paused and resumed without having to move the pieces. The buttons on the side lock and unlock the pieces.

The set is in good condition for its age. 2 red pawns are slightly different to the rest of the set (see photo) but still have the brass pegs on the bottom and work just the same. There is also a chip on the base of one knight (see photo). Otherwise there are no major damages.

The mahogany box is in good condition with a nice aged patina. It is stamped on the edges "Jaques. London. In Statu Quo. Chess Board".
