Jaques in Statu Quo Travelling Chess Set

1900 - 1920
Description

A lovely example of a high quality travelling chess set made by Jaques of London in the early 20th Century. The pieces are finely carved from bone (bovine), with one set stained red and the other left natural. It is a very clever design with each piece having a brass peg on the bottom which allows it to be fixed in place when the folding board is closed - allowing a game to be paused and resumed without having to move the pieces. The buttons on the side lock and unlock the pieces.

The set is in good condition for its age. 2 red pawns are slightly different to the rest of the set (see photo) but still have the brass pegs on the bottom and work just the same. There is also a chip on the base of one knight (see photo). Otherwise there are no major damages.

The mahogany box is in good condition with a nice aged patina. It is stamped on the edges "Jaques. London. In Statu Quo. Chess Board".

Approximate Measurements :

Closed Length : 9" (23cm) l x 4 1/2" (11cm) w x 2 1/4" (6cm) h

Open : 9" (23cm) square

The best description comes from the photos so please look at them all carefully and if you have any questions just ask.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
