A Rare Chinese Carved Soap Stone Brush Pot

This large Chinese soapstone brush pot was made for holding brushes used by scholars for Chinese calligraphy. The brushes would be rinsed and stored in the pot with their handle down so that the bundles of hair would keep their shape and point.

This piece is of a simple design with a ring turned base with five carved feet and the body is plain with a central carved panel front and back with lotus flowers and a collar of decoration at the rim.

This brush pot has been made from one solid piece of stone and has been finely hollowed.

Soapstone is a relatively soft material similar in the appearance of marble but is easily carved and is often used in 19th century Chinese art.

This piece has good patina and is in good condition.
