Treen: A Scottish Salt Box

Status: This item has been sold
Sold by: Waterfall Antiques

A wonderful example of a wall-hanging salt box dating from the third quarter of the 19th century. The demi-lune lift-up lid opens to reveal a simple storage compartment. The rounded main body, comprised of alternating strips of mahogany and sycamore, is topped with a brass band. There is a wavy edge upstand with a cutout to enable wall hanging. This beautiful piece of Scottish treen, with its untouched original patination, dates from around 1850 to 1875.
