A Rare Dissected Puzzle by Darton - Early 1800s

18th century
Description

An extremely rare dissected puzzle by Darton. This puzzle was produced in the early 1800's as a teaching aid. It was crafted for young travellers to gain some knowledge of men in distant parts of the globe.

William Darton set up his own publishing house at 56 Holborn Hill London in 1808.

Dissected puzzles were the forerunners to jigsaws. They were made very simply by placing a picture on a piece of mahjogany and cutting it into shapes. Some of the edge pieces interlock and the middle pieces just push together.

A rare survivor.

Measurements are for the box, not original but similar in style, to the original.

Remarkably all pieces have stayed together.

More images are available for the other pieces .

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
