Welsh Lovespoon of First World War and Welsh Guards Interest, Inscribed "Ypres 1917"

Description

Extremely rare and probably unique Welsh lovespoon in oak (with inset bone embellishments) made from timber from the Cloth Hall at Ypres, Belgium, which was destroyed by the German Army in successive bombardments from 1915. At the top of the front is a semi-circular bone plaque with the inscription "Ypres 1917" above a garland, over a pair of fretted hearts underlined by leaf-decorated bone strips, with two chip-carved geometric designs below and separated from the carved bowl by a small bone triangle. The profile is nicely tapered, and on the reverse is a paper label with a hand-written ink inscription "Cloth Hall Ypres" above a bone plaque with "Welsh Guards" around the leek motif and with the date "1915". Good colour and untouched surface.
