Superb Gothic Revival Carved Walnut Book Slide

A wonderful and very unusual nineteenth century Gothic Revival book slide. The slide is in solid walnut and each end has the most wonderfully carved end, which slide apart to accommodate more books. The ends are slightly different in design. One end features carved fish and the other eagles. The two ends have the most detailed Gothic tracery and the small central motif of the pelican of piety feeding her chicks. The book slide is in superb untouched condition, no damage or losses. The patina is dry and the colour slightly faded, it literally looks like it has just been removed from the library it has been all its life. A unique and hugely decorative item. C.1870.
