An Extremely Rare Large Belgium Flag from the Philadelphia Centennial Exhibition of 1876

19th century
Description

This flag was made in America by The Horstmann brothers of Philadelphia and dates 1876. During the American civil war of 1861-64 the Horstmann brothers supplied the uniforms, flags and buttons for the Union Army. In 1876 The Centennial Exhibition was held in Philadelphia to celebrate 100 years of Independence from England (it was similar to our own Great Exhibition in Crystal Palace). At the Exhibition the Horstmann brothers exhibited various flags of this exact size including those of a number of European countries. This flag I believe was shown there and is stencilled with Horstmann brothers name and the country name Belgium.

This flag has been framed behind UV plexi glass and stitched onto a backing that has been treated so that it does not react with the antique fabric of the flag. To my knowledge, this is the only Belgium example still in existence from the exhibition.

Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
