Fine Quality 19thc Anglo Indian Profusely Carved Padouk & Brass Inlaid Four Fold Screen from Northern India

Fine quality late 19th century (circa 1880) Anglo Indian profusely carved padouk and brass inlaid four fold screen from Northern India.

This highly decorative item consists of four panels joined to create a screen, each panel having a carved and pierced crest to the top with floral and foliate decoration, carved finials to either side, the uprights with carved geometric design and inlaid brass flower decoration.

The top sections consists of pierced panels of ‘pinjra’ work, this meaning birdcage, surrounded by a carved geometric edge. The middle sections consisting of large brass inlaid floral and foliate panels of fine quality surrounded by carved geometric edge, the lower sections consist of pierced panels of pinjra work surrounded by carved geometric edge.

Each panel is supported by Moorish style arcaded legs with carved floral decoration, the reverse of the screen being identical to the front other than the middle panels are plain.

This screen takes influence from two areas in Northern India, those of Hoshiarpur being renowned for the superb and intricate inlay work in items of furniture and the area of Simla renowned for ‘pinjra’ work, these areas being very close to each other geographically and the two styles coming together and resulting in a highly decorative fine piece of work.

This screen is in excellent condition for age, is of stable construction and can go straight into a home - a very versatile piece.
