Antique Treen Stay Busk - Dated 1791

18th century
Description

An antique treen stay busk dated 1791. Chip carved with roundels, goblets, a wheel of fortune, key hole and a key - 'to my heart'. On the reverse is the name Mary carved and the date 1791 again.

Slight loss to chip carving on some parts of the edging, otherwise in good condition with lots of carved decoration.

It measures approx 33cm l x 3.5cm w

Corsets were called stays and a treen stay busk was essentially a flat piece of wood which fitted into a front pocket of the corset. Many were plain but the carved ones were given as love tokens with symbols similar in meaning to the Welsh Love spoons.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
